Big charcoal drawings from the 1980's
When I was studying at the Hornsey College of Art in the early 1980’s, I devoted most of the second year of my degree course to practicing the discipline of drawing. I was developing my understanding of structure, line, tone, light and shadow, learning how these things could fundamentally underpin the physical aspects of image-making and painting.
Enter the Sixth Land
This painting is called Enter the Sixth Land. It is some kind of portal to the place I've described here. I painted it in 1991 during a very fruitful period when I was living a lonely life in a bedsit in Westbourne Park.
Forty year-old passport
These are pages from my first passport. It was issued in 1980 when I was 16, but by 1984 I had changed so much that I got a new photo added.
